Alcohol is the leading preventable cause of birth defects in the United States and Ukraine has one of the highest rates of children born with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. I am both a concerned American Citizen and I am Ukrainian, which is why I felt so connected to this problem. The main design problem was to find an effective way to explain data that was also engaging to the viewer. I wanted to visualize the data without it looking like a commonplace infographic.
I was inspired by the surgeon general warning label found on all USA alcohol products, but I wanted to make sure my information did not get lost in the text. I took all my data from the CDC, Mayo Clinic, American Pregnancy Association, National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, World Health Organization and American Medical Association and organized it in a hierarchy and then used color to create a visual hierarchy. The idea is that the audience will remember key points of the data while also seeing the visual difference in how much data is available about both countries.
